THE HOME BUILD PROGRAM
Part of the Careers in Construction curriculum in Colorado Springs is the Home Build program. In place since the 2018/2019 school year, this program enables students to construct a 1200 square foot modular home on school district property. The goal is to have each school (that’s able) build at least one home per school year. Students use the skills they have learned in their classroom settings – carpentry, plumbing, electrical and OSHA 10 safety – to construct the new home. Industry professionals provide on-site support through Builder Captains as well as licensed trade partners.
Through industry donations at the local, regional, and national level, this program provides each school with the materials needed for students to build a small house.
LOCALLY SUPPORTED SELF SUSTAINING MODEL
Proceeds from the sale of completed homes are reinvested in CICC, assuring visibility, viability and sustainability. Local and national supply companies are recognizing the value and success of CICC with commitments to the Home Build program keeping the cost of building low and profits significant to fund the program.
