THE PROGRAM
The Careers in Construction program brings construction-based vocational education to high school students in participating schools across the State of Colorado. The program gives high school students the opportunity to enroll in construction courses (offered as electives) and learn about career pathways available in the construction industry.
THE CURRICULUM
The curriculum facilitated by Careers in Construction is the nationally recognized, and patented Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) from the Home Builders Institute. Vetted by subject matter experts, PACT guarantees students will learn residential construction focused skills, receive hands-on training, and master the knowledge needed for an entry-level job in the building industry.
PACT IS:
- 75% hands on, competency-based, industry-validated curriculum
- Closely aligned with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
- One of three national curricula recognized and approved by the US Department of Labor
- Available with Spanish translation
THE CLASSES
The Careers In Construction program offers four Core Training Classes and ten Trade specific classes from which participating schools can choose. The program integrates performance-based learning in the building trades with vocational and academic skills training and includes life skills, critical thinking, career development, and on-the-job training.
THE HOME BUILD PROGRAM
In Colorado Springs, part of the Careers in Construction curriculum is the Home Build program. This program enables Colorado Springs students to construct a 1,200 square foot modular home on school district property as part of their Career Technical Education classes. Students use the skills they have learned in their classroom settings – carpentry, plumbing, electrical and OSHA 10 safety – to construct the home. Industry professionals and licensed trade partners provide on-site support.
CERTIFICATIONS
While learning, students can earn a trade-specific pre-apprenticeship certificate, OSHA-10 certification, and other industry-recognized credentials. These certifications, and exemptions granted from Colorado youth law, allow students ages 15, 16 and 17 to work as interns and provide a career path directly out of high school.
JOB PLACEMENT
All students participating in the program are eligible to receive personalized job and internship placement assistance through the Careers in Construction Colorado chapter. This includes:
- creating or updating resumes,
- developing interview skills,
- conducting mock interviews,
- preparing students to stand out at job and career fairs, and
- matching students to job opportunities based on grade, skill level, interests and availability.
